In a milestone moment for the Angling Trade Association and access to fishing for all, FreeSpirit, the flagship community vessel of the FreeSpirit of the Sea project, which will dock in Portsmouth on July 25th.
Spearheaded by Free Spirit of the Sea CIC, this groundbreaking project is dedicated to delivering educational, therapeutic, environmental, and angling experiences for disadvantaged children, young people, and community groups across the UK’s coastal communities.
At the heart of the initiative is the FreeSpirit vessel – a purpose-built, state-of-the-art boat designed to provide safe, inclusive, and meaningful access to the sea.
A key mission is to break down the barriers that prevent many people from experiencing the joy and benefits of recreational fishing. By getting more individuals, especially those from underserved backgrounds, out on the water with a rod in hand, FreeSpirit promotes not just skill development and personal well-being, but a deeper connection with nature and marine stewardship.
The vessel’s arrival in Portsmouth marks the beginning of this ambitious and inspiring journey. Thanks to the generous support of Brittany Ferries, FreeSpirit will be safely transported across the Channel, showing what’s possible when industry and community come together. Once in the UK, Premier Marinas Port Solent will host the vessel for its full fit-out – an essential phase in preparing FreeSpirit for its impactful work ahead.
Outfitted with the latest in marine safety equipment from Crewsaver and Survitec – and powered by advanced navigation and communication systems from Navico Group – FreeSpirit will be fully equipped to deliver engaging and safe experiences at sea for all participants, whether they are learning to fish for the first time or exploring marine life through science and sustainability.
For the Angling Trade Association, this project represents a significant expansion of its role in society. It’s a bold step that showcases how the angling sector can lead on social inclusion, environmental education, and community engagement.
Fishing is more than a pastime – it’s a pathway to mental wellness, personal achievement and environmental connection. FreeSpirit allows the industry to offer this pathway to those who might otherwise never have the chance.
This is a vessel with a mission: to make angling — and all the life-changing opportunities it offers — accessible to everyone. By supporting FreeSpirit, the ATA is helping shape a more inclusive future for the sport and fostering the next generation of anglers, conservationists and sea lovers.
As FreeSpirit prepares to launch its mission, the ATA is encouraging all members and the wider public to get involved. From hosting workshops and supporting outreach days to simply helping spread the word, there are many ways to be part of this remarkable initiative.
